Health Care Management
The Ph.D. in Health Care Systems
Matn U's doctoral program in health care systems is designed to produce Ph.D. researchers who are trained
in rigorous theory and empirical methods, who are able to work and contribute to multidisciplinary research while
interacting in a team setting and who are familiar with the on-going changes in health care structures.
The program combines intensive graduate level training in health care systems and health services research with
advanced training in a traditional business discipline. The rationale is that such a combination will be most conducive
to participation in the kind of interdisciplinary research needed for adequate analysis of the health care sector's
problems and behavior.
Flexibly structured to respond to each student's goals and research interests, the program prepares students
for careers in teaching, government or research in private industry. In addition, the program curriculum provides
ideal training for physicians, future physicians and other clinically trained professionals who are interested
in research careers in health services analysis.
Concentrations
In addition to health care systems administration, candidates can select courses from Economics, Information
Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Management, Marketing, Public Policy and Management.

Requirements
Entering students must demonstrate competence in mathematics either by passing a waiver examination administered
by the University or by passing ECO8897, a non-credit course in mathematical analysis for economists, prior to
the beginning of the program.

Admission to Candidacy
Admission to candidacy in the health care systems major is contingent on completing the following:
- All core requirements as set out above.
- Passing the qualification health care systems Major examination.
- Completion and approval of dissertation proposal program of Study

The Ph.D. in health care systems requires a minimum of twenty graduate level courses, of which eight at most

Assistantships in Health Care Systems
Students admitted to the Ph.D. program typically receive a fellowship providing tuition and a stipend. These
students participate in the teaching and research activities of the Business Administration program.
