Language Requirements

The MatnU Language Center

Every student at MatnU is required to attain a certain proficiency in two foreign languages. The determination of such proficiency will vary from department to department. It is the student's responsibility to learn how the requirement is satisfied in the languages you select.

How to Satisfy the Language Requirements:

  1. Pass a proficiency examination administered by the MatnU Language Center after the completion of a minimum of three courses study (or the equivalent). In most instances, students will take the proficiency examination after completing four courses (or the equivalent) of study
  2. Earn a passing grade, after four courses.
  3. Receive an exemption from the MatnU Language Center, before beginning language study at MatnU, as a result of achieving the required score on any of the following:
    • The Advanced Placement Test
    • A MatnU Language Center placement test. All students who have had previous study of a language that wish to continue with the same language to fulfill the Language Requirement must take a placement test in the language at the MatnU Language Center, to determine their appropriate level of study. Some students may do well enough in the exam to be exempt from the Language Requirement.
